Yes!!..we would all love to have HAM radios; however that is not feasable for most. We use FRS and GMRS radios. I would sugest GMRS as they aford a greater range of communication.
Midland XT511 Home Base is a good start ...
GMRS/FRS radio(GMRS has an aprox 28 mile range in open ) with 5 power sources one of which is crank and has an am/fm/ NOAA radio and 3 led flashlight. They go for around $80 with the hand Mic included. Cabela's is a good source.
